PERSONALITY DIMENSIONS INSIDE ORGANIZATIONS: A META-ANALYTIC APPROACH

Abstract

In the present study a research paper was conducted concerning the personality dimensions represented by the Big Five factors in relation with the leadership style in different organizations,  using a meta-analytic approach. The main objective was to underline the meta-analytic techniques and support for exploring different associations created between certain personality dimensions and the tendency to adopt a specific leadership style in organizations. A sample of 3522 participants was used, gathered from 10 specific studies which focused on the above-mentioned subject, employees and students from different organizations and institutions, with an age mean of 33.15, while the gender mean was 61.9% male subjects. In the present study was also completed concerning specific variables like: organizational culture (individualist versus collectivist), the evaluation procedure of subjects (self-evaluation versus peer to peer evaluation), subjects’ age (teens versus adults) etc., variables which can influence, moderate or mediate the above mentioned correlations. Participants in the study have completed the following psychological instruments: NEOPIR (Costa and McCrae cited in Shao & Webber, 2006), for evaluating the personality dimensions; MLQ (Bass & Avolio, 1998), for evaluating the leadership styles.

Results showed that there are certain significant correlations between the Big Five dimensions and the leadership style which, in a constant way and in certain conditions correlate. These moderate correlations between the analyzed dimensions of personality and leadership style demand future research.

In conclusion this study highlights the personality factors or dimensions in organizations, analyzing them through meta-analytic techniques, which in some cases show a complete different perspective. Diagnosing these issues in this manner may lead to a better understanding of how people act at work in relation to their colleagues and leaders, and a better counseling in education for career development.
